SLD Teaching Assistant – Newham, East London – Immediate Start

A Special School in Newham is seeking an SLD Teaching Assistant to support pupils with Severe Learning Difficulties (SLD) and additional needs. This is a full-time, long-term role supporting pupils who require a structured, consistent, and highly individualised approach to learning.

You will work alongside SEN teachers and specialist professionals to support pupils’ learning, communication, independence, and engagement throughout the school day.

SLD Teaching Assistant – What the Role Offers:

  • £444–£513 per week (PAYE, holiday pay included)

  • Full-time, term time only (Monday to Friday, 8:00am–3:30pm)

  • Immediate start until July 2026

  • Long-term opportunity within a specialist SEN setting

  • Experience working alongside SEN teachers and multidisciplinary professionals

SLD Teaching Assistant – Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide 1:1 and small-group support for pupils with SLD, following EHCPs and individual learning plans

  • Support communication using AAC strategies, including Makaton, visual timetables, symbols, and sensory cues

  • Assist with differentiated learning activities focused on functional skills, independence, and life skills

  • Support pupils with sensory processing needs and emotional regulation

  • Work collaboratively with teachers, therapists, and support staff to implement SEN strategies

  • Maintain a structured classroom environment that supports routine and engagement

  • Monitor and record pupil progress and contribute to reviews where required

  • Support pupils during transitions, routines, and unstructured periods

SLD Teaching Assistant – Ideal Candidate:

  • Experience supporting children or young people with SLD or complex SEND, ideally in a special school

  • Understanding of severe learning difficulties and inclusive SEN practice

  • Ability to follow structured plans and adapt support to individual needs

  • Strong communication and teamwork skills

  • Level 3 qualification in Supporting Teaching and Learning or SEN (desirable)

  • Enhanced DBS on the Update Service, or willingness to obtain one
