Job Description

English ECT – Haringey – September 2026

An ambitious, culturally rich secondary school in Haringey is seeking a passionate and articulate English ECT to join their celebrated English department from September 2026. This is a permanent English ECT role within a school rated Good by Ofsted, offering an outstanding foundation for an early career practitioner who is serious about their craft and committed to building a long-term career in a school that genuinely invests in its people.

About the School

This Haringey secondary school serves one of London's most diverse and intellectually vibrant communities, and its English curriculum reflects that richness with ambition and depth. Literature is taught with rigour and genuine enthusiasm - from canonical texts to contemporary voices - and writing is developed as a discipline across all year groups with a strong focus on precision, argument, and voice. The school operates a clear, restorative behaviour framework that gives every English ECT the confidence to establish themselves as a credible, impactful classroom presence from day one. Enrichment provision including spoken word events, a thriving school magazine, creative writing competitions, and university application support underscores the department's commitment to developing articulate, intellectually curious young people.

What the School Offers

  • A well-structured ECT induction with a dedicated English mentor, regular observation and feedback cycles, and protected professional development time
  • An English department with a strong collegial culture - shared planning, open resources, and genuine mutual support between staff
  • A school community that places reading and oracy at the centre of its wider academic identity, giving English genuine whole-school prominence
  • Tangible progression routes for early career teachers, with several current middle leaders having come through the ECT programme
  • A diverse, engaged pupil body that brings real life, perspective, and energy into every English lesson

The Role

As an English ECT, you will teach engaging, knowledge-rich English lessons across KS3 and KS4, developing pupils' reading comprehension, analytical writing, and spoken communication with care and precision. You will interrogate assessment data to understand where individual pupils are in their learning journey and adjust your planning accordingly, contributing to departmental schemes of work as your expertise grows. You will take an active role in the school's literacy and enrichment programmes, forging strong, productive relationships with pupils and their families along the way. Growing in confidence and independence as a practitioner will be at the heart of your first year as an English ECT in this school.

What the School is Looking For

This permanent English ECT position will suit candidates who:

  • Hold QTS or are in the final stages of a UK-recognised initial teacher training programme
  • Graduated with a 2:1 or above in English, English Literature, or a closely related discipline from a reputable university - Russell Group or equivalent strongly preferred
  • Have experience teaching English in a UK secondary school setting through timetabled placements or the start of an ECT year
  • Can demonstrate the ability to plan well-structured, progressive lessons that produce clear and measurable gains in pupil literacy and analytical skills
  • Are able to manage a classroom confidently within an established whole-school behaviour framework
  • Hold full legal entitlement to work in the UK - visa sponsorship is not available through this school

This role is open to candidates completing or having recently completed formal UK teacher training only.

Salary & Contract

Inner London MPS: £40,317 to £52,300, with UPS up to £62,496. Starting salary will reflect ECT status, with clear and supported progression as induction is successfully completed.

English is the beating heart of any school curriculum, and this Haringey school is looking for an English ECT who understands that and wants to build something lasting. If you are ready to commit to a permanent Secondary Teaching Opportunity in a department where your love of literature and language will be matched by those around you, this is the role to apply for.
