Job Description

English ECT – Enfield – September 2026

A well-regarded, academically ambitious secondary school in Enfield is looking to appoint a thoughtful and driven English ECT to join their thriving English department from September 2026. This is a permanent English ECT role within a school rated Good by Ofsted, offering a structured, nurturing, and intellectually stimulating environment for an early career practitioner ready to commit to a school that takes the development of its teachers as seriously as the education of its pupils.

About the School

This Enfield secondary school has built a strong reputation for the quality of its English provision, with a department that champions ambitious literature choices, disciplined analytical writing, and a genuine culture of reading for pleasure across all year groups. Pupils are encouraged to engage critically and creatively with texts from a wide range of traditions, and oracy is woven deliberately into the curriculum from KS3 onwards. The school maintains high behavioural standards through a clear, consistently applied framework that gives every English ECT the platform to teach with confidence and establish strong classroom presence from the outset. A thriving creative writing club, an annual school production, and a student-led literary journal reflect the depth of the school's commitment to English beyond the timetable.

What the School Offers

  • A fully funded, well-structured ECT induction programme with a subject-specialist English mentor assigned from day one
  • Timetable protection and dedicated weekly professional development time throughout the induction period
  • An English team with a genuine open-door culture - experienced colleagues who share planning, offer honest feedback, and invest in one another's growth
  • A school where literacy is a whole-school priority, giving the English department real influence and visibility across the curriculum
  • A proven record of supporting English ECT candidates into middle leadership roles within three to four years of joining

The Role

As an English ECT, you will teach English Language and Literature across KS3 and KS4, planning lessons that stretch pupils' thinking, sharpen their writing, and develop their confidence as readers and communicators. You will use formative and summative assessment purposefully - not just to report on progress but to actively shape what comes next in your teaching sequences. You will contribute to the department's wider work, including enrichment activities, reading initiatives, and parents' evenings, and engage positively with the school's pastoral systems to support the whole-child development of the pupils in your care. Each week as an English ECT in this school will bring fresh challenge alongside genuine support.

What the School is Looking For

This permanent English ECT position will suit candidates who:

  • Are completing or have recently completed a UK-recognised initial teacher training programme leading to QTS
  • Hold a strong degree in English, English Literature, or a related discipline - a 2:1 or above from a reputable university, with Russell Group or equivalent background preferred
  • Bring classroom experience from UK secondary school placements or the early stages of an ECT year, with evidence of well-planned lessons and tangible pupil progress
  • Show genuine enthusiasm for literature and language, and the ability to transmit that enthusiasm to teenagers
  • Are confident inhabiting a structured behaviour framework and contributing to a positive whole-school culture
  • Are fully entitled to work in the UK without requiring visa sponsorship

Applications are welcome from candidates at the very start of their teaching career, provided formal UK teacher training has been completed or is in its final stages.

Salary & Contract

Outer London MPS: £37,870 to £50,474, with UPS up to £56,154. Salary on appointment will reflect ECT status, with incremental progression supported throughout induction and beyond.

Good English teachers change lives, and this Enfield school is looking for an English ECT who believes that and wants to prove it over a long and rewarding career.
