Job Description

French & Spanish ECT – Enfield – September 2026

A high-achieving secondary school with sixth form in Enfield is seeking a talented and linguistically accomplished French & Spanish ECT to join their well-regarded Modern Foreign Languages department from September 2026. This is a permanent French & Spanish ECT role within a school rated Outstanding by Ofsted, offering an exceptional environment for an early career languages teacher with strong British school experience to establish and develop their practice.

About the School

This Enfield secondary school and sixth form places Modern Foreign Languages at the centre of a broad, knowledge-rich curriculum. French and Spanish are taught with precision and creativity across KS3 and KS4, with high GCSE uptake and a growing cohort of A-Level linguists in the sixth form reflecting the quality of teaching throughout the lower school. The school operates a firm, consistent behaviour framework that gives every French & Spanish ECT the structure and confidence to focus on language delivery from day one. Cultural enrichment including European exchange visits, language immersion days, and film and literature events brings both languages to life and deepens pupils' appreciation of the wider world.

What the School Offers

  • A structured ECT induction programme with a dedicated MFL mentor and formally protected professional development time each week
  • A well-resourced MFL department with shared planning structures, digital language tools, and a genuinely collaborative team ethos
  • Sixth form teaching opportunities as confidence and experience grow, with scope to develop A-Level French or Spanish provision over time
  • A school community that actively values multilingualism, with many pupils bringing their own linguistic heritage into the classroom
  • Clear and transparent progression routes from ECT into MFL subject leadership for high-performing practitioners

The Role

As a French & Spanish ECT, you will teach both languages across KS3 and KS4, delivering well-sequenced, communicative lessons that develop pupils' accuracy, fluency, and cultural understanding progressively through each year group. You will use formative and summative assessment to track progress and refine your teaching, contribute to departmental planning and resource development, and play an active role in the school's cultural enrichment programme. Building confident, positive relationships with pupils, parents, and colleagues will be central to your growth as a French & Spanish ECT in this school.

What the School is Looking For

This permanent French & Spanish ECT position will suit candidates who:

  • Hold British Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) awarded through a UK-accredited initial teacher training programme - overseas teaching qualifications and international QTS equivalencies will not be considered for this role
  • Possess substantial, hands-on experience of the British national curriculum for MFL, with a thorough understanding of KS3 and KS4 language programmes of study and GCSE assessment frameworks
  • Graduated with a 2:1 or above in Modern Languages or a closely related discipline from a reputable UK university, ideally Russell Group
  • Can evidence well-planned, structured lessons delivered within British secondary school settings - placements or an ECT year in UK schools only
  • Have a clear track record of measurable pupil progress in both French and Spanish within the British classroom context
  • Are confident working within an established British whole-school behaviour framework
  • Hold full legal entitlement to work in the UK - visa sponsorship is not available and will not be considered

Candidates trained or primarily experienced outside of the British school system are respectfully advised that this role requires deep familiarity with the English national curriculum and UK examination structures, and applications from those without this background will not be progressed.

Salary & Contract

Outer London MPS: £37,870 to £50,474, with UPS up to £56,154. Salary on appointment will reflect ECT status with clear, supported progression as induction is completed.
