Job Description

SEND Teaching Assistant | Hackney | Immediate Start

Do you have a passion for supporting young people with additional needs and want to gain valuable experience within a secondary school setting? A highly inclusive secondary school in Hackney is seeking a SEND Teaching Assistant to join immediately on a full-time, long-term basis until July 2027.

The school has established a strong commitment to inclusion, with a dedicated SEND and pastoral structure supporting pupils throughout KS3 and KS4. Staff work closely across departments to ensure students with Autism, ADHD, Speech & Language needs, SEMH and other learning difficulties can access lessons successfully. As a SEND Teaching Assistant, you will become an important part of that support network, helping pupils build confidence, independence and stronger engagement with their learning.

SEND Teaching Assistant – What the School Offers

• Long-term placement starting immediately until July 2027
• 33.5 working hours per week, including half-days on Fridays
• £444–£513 per week via PAYE (inclusive of holiday pay)
• Access to SEND-focused CPD and professional development opportunities
• Opportunities to work alongside experienced SEND professionals, teachers and pastoral staff
• Experience delivering targeted interventions across KS3 and KS4
• Exposure to teacher training pathways and wider careers in education
• A collaborative staff culture with inclusion and pupil progress at its centre

The Role

You will support students with SEND across KS3 and KS4 within mainstream lessons and through targeted intervention sessions. Responsibilities will include providing 1:1 and small-group support, adapting learning activities, reinforcing strategies recommended by specialist professionals and helping pupils overcome academic, communication and emotional barriers to learning. You will also work closely with teaching and pastoral staff to monitor engagement and progress.

The Ideal Candidate

• Holds a 2:1 degree or above from a leading UK university
• Has previous child-centred experience through tutoring, mentoring, coaching or care-based roles
• Demonstrates patience, resilience and excellent communication skills
• Has a genuine interest in SEND and supporting young people with additional needs
