Job Description

Speech & Language Teaching Assistant | Brentwood | ASAP Start

Full-time | Term-time only | ASAP Start

A highly inclusive primary school in Brentwood is seeking a dedicated Speech & Language Teaching Assistant to join their supportive team as soon as possible. This long-term opportunity would be particularly suited to graduates looking to gain valuable practical experience supporting children with speech, language and communication needs before progressing into Speech & Language Therapy, Educational Psychology, Teaching or wider SEND careers.

The school has a strong commitment to inclusion and early intervention, with speech, language and communication development embedded throughout the school day. Pupils benefit from targeted interventions, specialist SEND support and close collaboration between teaching staff, SENCOs and external professionals.

As a Speech & Language Teaching Assistant, you will have the opportunity to work closely with qualified Speech and Language Therapists, gaining practical experience of intervention delivery, communication strategies and approaches used to support children's speech and language development.

Key responsibilities:

  • Deliver targeted speech and language interventions on a 1:1 and small-group basis
  • Support pupils with speech, language and communication needs within the classroom
  • Work alongside qualified Speech and Language Therapists to implement recommended strategies
  • Reinforce individual therapy targets and help pupils apply their communication skills throughout the school day
  • Build positive relationships with pupils and provide consistent, encouraging support
  • Monitor pupil progress and provide feedback to teachers, the SENCO and specialist staff
  • Support the wider inclusion and SEND provision across the school

What the school offers:

  • Direct experience working alongside qualified Speech and Language Therapists
  • Valuable exposure to speech, language and communication interventions
  • SEND and communication-focused training opportunities
  • Experience working collaboratively with SENCOs and external specialists
  • Structured intervention programmes and excellent support from experienced staff
  • Strong preparation for graduates considering a future career in Speech & Language Therapy or other SEND-related professions

The successful candidate will:

  • Hold a 1st Class or 2:1 degree in a relevant subject, such as Speech and Language Therapy, Psychology, Education, Linguistics, English or a related discipline
  • Have previous experience working with children or young people — highly desirable
  • Have a genuine interest in supporting children with speech, language, communication or additional needs
  • Demonstrate excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Be patient, empathetic and confident when working with children
  • Be keen to develop their understanding of speech and language interventions and SEND
  • Be able to work effectively as part of a wider teaching and specialist support team

Please note, applicants must have the legal right to work in the UK, as we are unable to offer visa sponsorship for this position.
