EAL Teaching Assistant – Sutton

Linguistics Graduate looking to gain meaningful experience before pursuing Speech & Language Therapy?

This EAL Teaching Assistant role could give you the opportunity to take your understanding of language and communication out of the lecture theatre and into a real secondary school environment.

You will work with students who are developing their English language skills, helping them communicate confidently and access learning across the curriculum.

Alongside gaining classroom experience, you will develop a practical understanding of how language barriers can affect learning, confidence and participation.

EAL Teaching Assistant | Benefits of the Role:

• Put your knowledge of phonetics, pronunciation and language structure into practice when supporting students.
• Develop a stronger understanding of language acquisition and how individuals learn and communicate in a second language.
• Build experience adapting your communication style, explaining concepts clearly and using resources to overcome language barriers.
• Develop the patience, empathy and interpersonal skills that are essential when working with individuals who find communication challenging.
• Gain relevant experience to strengthen future applications for Speech & Language Therapy postgraduate training.

EAL Teaching Assistant | Key Responsibilities:

• Work with individuals and small groups to develop English language skills.
• Support targeted language interventions alongside the EAL Learning Co-ordinator.
• Adapt classroom resources so students can engage with the curriculum.
• Provide support with reading, writing, translation, interpreting and assessments where required.
• Monitor students' development and provide feedback to teaching staff.
• Encourage students to become more confident communicators within the school environment.

EAL Teaching Assistant | Essential Qualities:

• Degree in Linguistics, MFL or a related subject, with Linguistics particularly desirable.
• Genuine interest in Speech & Language Therapy, language development and communication.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills.
• Patient, approachable and confident when working with young people.
• Keen to gain practical experience that complements their academic background and future career ambitions.
