Job Description

Business & Economics Head of Department – Enfield – September 2026

A high-achieving secondary school with sixth form in Enfield is seeking an experienced and visionary Business & Economics Head of Department to lead their thriving faculty from September 2026. This is a permanent Business & Economics HoD role within a school rated Outstanding by Ofsted, offering an exceptional opportunity for an ambitious middle leader to shape, develop, and drive a high-performing department within a school that places academic excellence and staff development at the very heart of everything it does.

About the School

This Enfield secondary school and sixth form has cultivated a strong reputation for academic rigour, purposeful teaching, and a genuinely aspirational culture. The Business and Economics faculty delivers an engaging, real-world curriculum across KS4 and KS5, with strong GCSE, A-Level, and BTEC outcomes underpinned by structured, evidence-based classroom practice. Behaviour is managed through clear, consistent whole-school systems that allow teachers and leaders to focus on what matters most - outstanding learning and meaningful pupil progress. Leadership development is actively encouraged, and the school has a strong track record of retaining and progressing talented middle leaders into senior roles.

What the School Offers

  • A well-established Business & Economics HoD role with full departmental autonomy and SLT backing
  • Structured CPD programme with clear pathways into senior leadership
  • Robust behaviour policy with strong pastoral and middle leadership support structures
  • Collaborative faculty planning with a commitment to purposeful and manageable workloads
  • A high-performing school community with strong employer links, industry partnerships, and sixth form provision

The Role

As Business & Economics Head of Department, you will take full responsibility for the leadership, management, and continued development of the faculty. You will oversee curriculum planning and sequencing across KS4 and KS5, lead on assessment, data analysis, and intervention strategies, and line manage and develop colleagues within the department. You will model outstanding classroom practice, contribute to whole-school improvement priorities, and build strong relationships with pupils, parents, and external partners. Driving enrichment provision - including enterprise competitions, Young Enterprise partnerships, and university economics programmes - will be a key part of your leadership vision as Business & Economics HoD.

What the School is Looking For

This permanent Business & Economics Head of Department position is best suited to candidates who:

  • Hold UK Qualified Teacher Status (QTS)
  • Possess a strong academic background - a 2:1 degree or above in Business, Economics, or a closely related discipline from a reputable university, ideally Russell Group
  • Can demonstrate a substantial and successful track record of secondary Business and/or Economics teaching within a UK school, with clear evidence of strong pupil outcomes at KS4 and KS5
  • Have proven experience of middle leadership - including curriculum development, staff management, and driving departmental improvement
  • Show a clear strategic vision for Business and Economics education and the ability to translate that vision into measurable outcomes
  • Are confident operating at the interface of classroom practice and whole-school leadership
  • Are legally entitled to work in the UK - the school is unable to provide visa sponsorship

This is a senior leadership role. Candidates without proven UK secondary teaching experience and demonstrable middle leadership responsibility will not be considered.

Salary & Contract

Outer London MPS: £37,870 to £50,474, with UPS up to £56,154. A TLR1 is attached to reflect the full head of department responsibilities. Exact value confirmed on application.
