Job Description
Maths Academic Mentor | Newham | September 2026 Start
£444–£513 weekly via PAYE (inclusive of holiday pay) | Full-time | Term-time only | September 2026–July 2027
An exceptional sixth form setting in Newham is looking to appoint a Maths Academic Mentor for the new academic year. This opportunity is particularly suited to individuals graduating this year who are keen to gain high-level academic mentoring experience before progressing into teaching or further study.
Students at the school consistently achieve some of the strongest A-Level outcomes in the country, with large numbers progressing annually to Oxbridge, Imperial, LSE and other Russell Group universities. Maths and Further Maths are among the school’s highest-performing subjects, supported by a culture of academic scholarship, structured intervention and extensive university preparation programmes.
Rather than traditional classroom support, this role focuses heavily on academic mentoring and targeted attainment work. The successful candidate will work closely with students preparing for GCSE resits, A-Level examinations and competitive university applications, helping to strengthen confidence, mathematical reasoning and independent study habits.
Key responsibilities:
• Delivering targeted Maths intervention sessions for small groups and individual students
• Supporting A-Level and GCSE students with problem-solving and exam preparation
• Monitoring academic progress alongside experienced teaching staff
• Encouraging strong study habits and independent learning skills
What the school can offer:
• Exposure to an exceptionally high-performing academic environment
• Opportunities to work alongside experienced Maths specialists and sixth form leaders
• Regular CPD focused on mentoring, pedagogy and academic intervention
• Experience supporting students applying to Oxbridge and competitive university courses
• Strong pathways into teacher training and long-term education careers
The successful candidate will hold, or be completing, a strong Maths-related degree alongside excellent communication skills and previous child-centred experience through tutoring, mentoring or outreach work. A genuine enthusiasm for Mathematics and education is essential.
