Job Description
Learning Support Assistant (Autism Support) | Kingston-upon-Thames
Are you a compassionate and emotionally intelligent Psychology or Education graduate eager to gain hands-on experience supporting a child with Autism? Would you love to develop your understanding of behaviour, communication, and emotional regulation before progressing to a career in Psychology, Therapy or Teaching?
We are seeking a Graduate Learning Support Assistant to work 1:1 with a bright and engaging Year 2 pupil with Autism at a welcoming and inclusive primary school in Kingston-upon-Thames.
This pupil is highly intelligent, with a big imagination and a keen interest in Lego, robots and football. He enjoys feeling grown-up and often sees himself as the “adult” in the classroom, so he thrives when given responsibility and choices. However, he can sometimes become frustrated or disruptive when things don’t go his way or when interacting with peers, so a calm, patient and quick-thinking graduate who can help him regulate emotions and stay engaged will excel in this role.
You’ll work closely with the class teacher, SENCo, and external professionals to provide consistent, structured support tailored to his needs. This includes helping him engage with learning tasks, manage transitions and build positive relationships with others.
What the school can offer you as a Learning Support Assistant:
- Full-time, term-time role: 8:30am – 3:30pm, Monday to Friday
- Excellent in-school training and ongoing support from SEN specialists
- A nurturing and inclusive ethos that values every child
- Ideal experience for future Educational Psychologists, Therapists, or SEND Teachers
Learning Support Assistant – Person Specification:
- A Psychology, Education, or closely-related degree
- Strong emotional intelligence and confidence managing challenging moments
- Patient, adaptable and able to build trust and rapport
- Interest in Autism, behaviour and child development
- Previous experience with children or SEND (desirable but not essential)
This Year 2 Learning Support Assistant (Autism Support) role offers a unique opportunity to make a real impact in a child’s learning journey while gaining invaluable practical experience for your future career in Psychology or Education.
If you’re a graduate who thrives on building meaningful connections and enjoys thinking on your feet, apply today to join this friendly Kingston primary school.
