Learning Support Assistant – Autism & Behaviour Support | Epping
Full-time | Term-time only | Split Role: Year 3 Classroom Support & 1:1 Autism Support | ASAP Start
A welcoming and inclusive primary school in Epping is seeking a compassionate, adaptable and relationship-focused Learning Support Assistant to join their team as soon as possible.
This long-term opportunity would suit a graduate or experienced support professional looking to develop valuable hands-on experience supporting pupils with autism and complex behavioural needs.
The role is split across the school day, with mornings spent providing general classroom support within Year 3, followed by afternoons delivering dedicated 1:1 support to a Year 3 pupil with autism who presents with significantly challenging behaviour.
The school is committed to providing consistent, structured and nurturing support, enabling the pupil to access learning, develop positive relationships and regulate throughout the school day.
You will work closely with the class teacher, SENCO and external specialists, gaining valuable experience in autism support, behaviour management, communication strategies and personalised interventions.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide adaptable and engaging classroom support within Year 3 during the morning session
- Deliver consistent 1:1 support to a pupil with autism and complex behavioural needs during the afternoon
- Implement behaviour, communication and emotional regulation strategies recommended by the SENCO and external professionals
- Build a strong, trusting relationship with the pupil to promote emotional safety, engagement and positive behaviour
- Support learning through clear structure, routine and consistent expectations
- Use calm communication, de-escalation techniques and positive behaviour strategies
- Monitor behaviour patterns, engagement and progress, sharing relevant feedback with teaching and specialist staff
- Support the wider SEND provision across the school
- Work collaboratively with teachers, support staff, the SENCO and external professionals

The Successful Candidate Will
- Hold a 1st Class or 2:1 degree in Psychology, Education, SEND, Social Sciences or a related subject (desirable)
- Have previous experience working with children or young people (essential)
- Demonstrate a genuine interest in supporting pupils with autism and behavioural needs
- Have excellent communication skills, patience and emotional resilience
- Be adaptable, versatile and confident working in dynamic situations
- Be able to build strong, trusting relationships with pupils who benefit from consistency and structure
- Demonstrate a calm and positive approach to challenging behaviour
- Work effectively as part of a wider teaching and specialist support team
