Are you an experienced Site Manager looking for a new opportunity within a welcoming primary school environment? We are seeking a reliable, proactive and hands-on Site Manager to join a supportive primary school in Harlow on a temporary basis, starting ASAP.

This is an excellent opportunity for a Site Manager who takes pride in maintaining a safe, secure and well-managed school environment and enjoys playing a key role in the smooth running of the school site.

The Role – Site Manager

The successful Site Manager will be responsible for overseeing the day-to-day management, maintenance, security and Health & Safety of the school site, while organising and supervising the caretaking and cleaning team.

The Site Manager will:

  • Organise and manage the work of the caretaking and cleaning team, including allocating duties and supporting staff with their day-to-day responsibilities.
  • Act as a keyholder, carrying out security procedures and opening and closing the school premises when required.
  • Complete routine checks of the school buildings, grounds, fencing and gates, arranging or carrying out repairs where necessary.
  • Ensure statutory Health & Safety checks and procedures are completed, including fire alarms, emergency lighting, fire doors and water temperature checks.
  • Identify and prioritise maintenance requirements and organise appropriate work programmes.
  • Carry out or arrange first-line repairs and general maintenance, including basic plumbing, redecoration, plastering and fencing repairs where appropriate.
  • Monitor contractors and external professionals, ensuring works are arranged and completed effectively.
  • Oversee the operation of the school's heating and hot water systems, including frost precaution procedures.
  • Ensure the school site is clean, tidy, well presented and free from litter, with drains and gullies maintained appropriately.
  • Ensure caretaking equipment is safe, operational and properly maintained.
  • Prepare the school premises for out-of-school activities and lettings, ensuring the site is ready before and cleared afterwards.
  • Respond appropriately to site emergencies, including fire, flooding, break-ins, accidents or major damage.
  • Support the recruitment, induction, training and management of cleaning staff where required.
  • Maintain appropriate inventories and ensure school equipment is checked regularly.
  • Work closely with the Headteacher, Estates Manager, school staff, contractors and visitors to ensure the site operates effectively.

Who We Are Looking For

We are keen to hear from an experienced Site Manager, particularly someone with previous experience in a school, premises, caretaking, buildings maintenance or security environment.

The ideal Site Manager will be:

  • Reliable, dependable and proactive.
  • Practical and confident carrying out general maintenance and DIY tasks.
  • Experienced in caretaking, buildings maintenance and/or site security.
  • Organised and able to plan and prioritise their own workload and that of others.
  • Confident supervising and supporting a team.
  • Knowledgeable about Health & Safety, security and building systems.
  • Calm and professional when responding to emergencies or challenging situations.
  • Approachable and able to build positive relationships with pupils, staff, contractors and visitors.
  • Flexible and capable of resolving problems independently.
  • Committed to maintaining a safe, secure and welcoming school environment.

Knowledge of First Aid is desirable, although training can be provided. A good understanding of Health & Safety and child protection procedures is also important for the role.
The school places a strong emphasis on creating a safe, calm and stimulating environment where children can thrive. As Site Manager, you will play an important role in ensuring the school premises remain safe, secure and ready for pupils, staff and the wider school community.
