Job Description

History Graduate – Teaching Assistant – Newham – Immediate Start

Are you a History Graduate who is passionate about inspiring young learners and fostering curiosity? If so, we want to hear from you!

We are looking for a dedicated Teaching Assistant to join a vibrant primary school in Newham, East London, starting immediately. This is an exciting opportunity for a History Graduate who is eager to gain valuable hands-on experience in the classroom while supporting students across Key Stages 1 and 2. Your academic background in history will be an incredible asset, enabling you to help students develop critical thinking, research skills, and an appreciation for the world around them.

This role offers a chance to make a real difference, whether you’re helping students engage with historical topics or supporting their literacy and communication skills.

Why This Role is Perfect for You:

  • Immediate start with a full-time contract for the academic year
  • Gain hands-on experience in a primary school — ideal for those considering a future in teaching or history education
  • Support students across KS1 and KS2 in a variety of subjects, including literacy, numeracy, and critical thinking
  • Join a supportive team with access to ongoing professional development opportunities
  • Clear career progression pathways with potential to move into teaching or other roles within education
  • Located in Newham, easily accessible via public transport, in a thriving, diverse community

What You’ll Be Doing:

  • Supporting the classroom: You’ll assist with engaging lessons, including both history-related topics and broader subjects like literacy and numeracy, helping students develop their knowledge and curiosity about the world.
  • Supporting literacy and research skills: With your background in history, you’ll help students develop key academic skills such as research, analysis, critical thinking, and the ability to articulate their ideas clearly.
  • One-to-one and small group support: Whether it's supporting individual students with reading or helping small groups grasp historical concepts, you’ll provide tailored guidance to help them succeed.
  • Collaborating with teachers and inclusion teams: You’ll work closely with the class teacher and the inclusion team to ensure that students with diverse learning needs receive the right support to thrive academically and socially.
  • Classroom organisation: You’ll assist with preparing materials, marking work, and maintaining an organised and welcoming learning environment.

What We’re Looking For:

  • A History Graduate with a passion for education and helping young learners succeed
  • Strong communication skills: The ability to clearly explain concepts and adjust your approach to meet individual students’ needs
  • Patience, empathy, and enthusiasm: You’ll be supporting students at different levels, so a caring attitude and the ability to engage children with diverse learning needs is essential
  • An interest in teaching or education: This role is an excellent stepping stone for those interested in pursuing a career in teaching, history education, or related fields
  • A team player: You’ll work closely with other educators to create a positive and inclusive learning environment

Why You’ll Love It Here:

This is an exciting opportunity to be part of a warm, inclusive, and community-focused school in Newham, East London. You’ll be working with a supportive team of educators who are dedicated to helping all students reach their potential. The school values professional growth and offers plenty of opportunities for career development.

This position is ideal for a History Graduate who is looking to gain valuable experience in education and make a real impact on students’ academic journeys. Whether you’re helping students develop research skills or simply encouraging a love of learning, this role will be both rewarding and fulfilling.
